Rapunzel - A tale in French and German

Once upon a time there was a couple who was desperate to have a child; finally God filled their vows and the woman found herself pregnant. The small window which opened on the back of their house allowed to see a luxuriant garden where the most beautiful flowers and aromatic plants abounded; However, it was enclosed by very high walls and no one dared to enter because it belonged to a very powerful magician and dreaded in the whole world. One day the woman was at her window and was looking in the garden. She caught sight of a sliver of Rapunzel, so fresh and so green that she had an irrepressible desire to eat it.

Her desire increased every day, and knowing that she could not be satisfied, she began to lose weight, and her appearance became pale and miserable. Her husband got scared and asked him the cause of his torment. She replied that if she could not taste the Rapunzel sweetie from the next garden, she would die. The husband who loved his wife decided to pick Rapunzel before it died, no matter what the price was. At nightfall he slipped over the wall into the garden behind the house, stole a handful of Rapunzel and brought it back to his wife. She immediately prepared a salad that she eagerly devoured. She appreciated them so much that the next day she had three times more desire. To have peace, in the evening, the husband had to climb again the wall of the garden. However, when he arrived downstairs, he was very frightened to find himself face to face with the magician. How dare you say she angrily go into my garden and steal my Rapunzel. You will repent, she said.

Ah, he replied, forgive me because I acted out of necessity, my wife saw your Rapunzel by the window and conceived such a desire that she will die if it is deprived.

The magician is softening, if it is so said she, I grant you the right to take at will on the only condition that you give me the child that your wife will give birth to. He will not miss anything and I will take care of him like a mother. In her panic, the husband acceded to all her requests, and when the woman had given birth, the magician presented herself at once, took the child to whom she gave the name of Rapunzel.
