How to do a gap year?

For students enrolled in higher education training

Since 2015, the gap year has been supervised by the Ministry of Higher Education, which on July 23, 2015 published a circular on the implementation of a gap period. In particular, it requires the establishment of an agreement between the institution and the student through an agreement which ensures the place of the student the following year.

Namely, some schools or universities grant the gap year only for professional experience (internship or fixed-term contract). Also, it is possible that the scholarship of scholarship students is kept only within the framework of an internship or training. As far as student status is concerned, there are also conditions for maintaining it.

You are a student and you have decided to make your request for a gap year: get closer to your institution and present your application file with all your supporting documents. Clearly express your project and show your motivation by arguing about the benefits you can derive from this experience.

To benefit from the gap, you must necessarily have permission from your school or university. Namely, that it is not mandatory and that it can be refused by your establishment.

As a student, the year abroad is an investment of time, but also of money. Even if you can obtain some financial aid to live this experience, knowing how to manage your budget with vigilance is very important. Indeed, going abroad involves significant expenses: plane ticket, visa fees, accommodation, etc.

In order to obtain your internship visa or / and a work permit abroad, you may be required to take out suitable student insurance. When it is not compulsory, student insurance is strongly recommended.
Once there, even for just a few months, you are not immune to illness or accident that could result in significant costs. Taking out travel health insurance before your departure allows you to approach your stay calmly and to fully enjoy your experience.

A successful experience during a gap year can open many doors for you, help you mature or confirm your choice of direction. Highlighted on your CV, it can greatly contribute to your professional integration or your resumption of studies.

And you, have you ever had a gap year or are you thinking of doing one? Tell us about your experience in the comments!
