Insurance broker

What is an insurance broker?

The insurance broker is a natural or legal person who acts as an intermediary between an insured and an insurance company. More specifically, it belongs to the category of “Insurance Intermediaries” (IAS), falling under financial intermediaries. An activity regulated by the Ministry of Economy, Finance and Industry.
As a result, the insurance broker is subject to several obligations: to be registered in the Trade and Companies Register (RCS) in his capacity as a Trader, as well as on the Single Register of Intermediaries, managed by ORIAS (Body for the register of insurance intermediaries). The latter verifies, each year upon renewal of the registration, that the professional fulfills the conditions required to exercise this activity.
Note that since January 2006, the profession is now represented by the Chambre Syndicale des Brokers d'Assurance (CSCA).

What is the role of an insurance broker?

Before signing. The broker has a duty to provide insurance advice to the insured in the choice of insurer and the implementation of contracts. As such, he negotiates the terms and conditions (protection, guarantees, prices) with insurance organizations, on behalf of his client.
After signing. The insurance broker retains an assistance role in bringing into play the guarantees taken out in the event of a risk, as well as in settling claims. At the same time, he monitors changes in his personal and professional situation in order to adapt the contract, and if necessary, offer a delegation of insurance.
What are the advantages of using an insurance broker?

Saving time. As a connoisseur of the market, an insurance broker can quickly assess the borrower's file, which organization to turn to in priority based on his profile and qualitatively compare the different proposals.
Saving money. Beyond his remuneration, his negotiating skills are often enough to justify it - whether through the relevance and adjustment of guarantees or through access to his preferential rates.
The "advice" dimension. Using an insurance broker allows you to benefit from sound advice at the time of the initial subscription, but also from scrupulous monitoring of the contract and proper compliance with its clauses.
A service geared towards the insured. Even if he works in partnership with insurance companies, this expert remains independent and entirely devoted to his client. This independence guarantees the relevance of the advice given, unlike an insurance agent, appointed by organizations to represent them.
