PROSTATE CANCER - GENERAL
PROSTATECAUS CANCER SYMPTOMS TREATMENTS
Here you will find general information about cancer, including how it occurs. This page deals specifically with prostate cancer.
Prostate
The prostate is a gland that is part of the male genitals. Located under the bladder and in front of the rectum, it is normally the size and shape of a chestnut. It is made up of glandular tissue surrounded by a fibromuscular layer (a combination of muscle and connective tissue).
The prostate produces fluid (prostatic fluid) which, together with the sperm produced by the testes, forms semen. The development and function of the prostate is influenced by male hormones (testosterone), which are made in the testes. These hormones regulate the growth of the prostate as well as the formation of prostatic fluid.

Prostate cancer in numbers
Figures from the Belgian Cancer Registry are used in the infographics below. We collect these numbers and display them as a graph. This way you can see how many prostate cancers occur each year and how many men die from it.

Staging
There are three stages in prostate cancer:
1st stage: The tumor is still localized in the envelope of the gland.
2nd stage: The tumor grows locally. Cancer cells came out of the envelope, but did not spread. The first symptoms appear.
3rd stage: Cancer cells leave the prostate and invade lymph nodes and bones to metastasize there.
