Vehicle theft
According to Statistics Canada, approximately 73,000 vehicle thefts were reported to police in 2013, a bill of over $ 1 billion to Canadians. While the overall trend in theft is down, vehicle theft clearly poses a significant risk that deserves the attention of all drivers. The first step in helping to reduce theft is to avoid leaving the keys in a moving vehicle, which is a leading cause of vehicle theft.
Reasons for vehicle theft
Auto thieves often know exactly what to do with stolen vehicles. Most of them are motivated by gain, specifically illicit financial gain, but sometimes thefts are attributed to a far from innocent pleasure. The reasons for vehicle theft can basically be broken down into these five general categories:
Sale outside of Canada: Stolen vehicles can sometimes be sold for several times their value in the domestic market outside of Canada. Stolen cars are routinely shipped to other countries with weaker law enforcement and higher resale value.
Sale as is in the region: Stolen vehicles are sometimes sold in the region with forged vehicle identification numbers. If thieves are cunning enough, they can convince their customers that they are buying a vehicle legitimately.
Parts: “Cutting up” or dismantling a vehicle for its parts is a common practice aimed at converting the vehicle into cash. Unsuspecting or unscrupulous garages frequently purchase stolen car parts to repair their customers' vehicles.
Means of Committing Another Crime: Thieves often need vehicles to commit other crimes, normally armed robberies. Most of these vehicles are found shortly after the illegal acts, abandoned and sometimes seriously damaged.
Borrowed for a Ride: Sometimes vehicles are only stolen for “trips”.
Avoid vehicle theft
Car thieves will be much more likely to steal cars that are not properly secured.
When you are not using your vehicle, always remember to do the following:
Lock the doors and mount the windows before leaving your vehicle.
Stop the engine and take your keys if you need to leave your vehicle.
Put your car in a locked garage, if possible.
Keep your registration and proof of insurance documents with you, not in the glove box.
Park your vehicle in supervised and safer places.
Hide your valuables in plain sight, and store them in the trunk of the car instead.
Apply the parking brake when leaving your vehicle, which will make it more difficult to tow.
Keep a spare key with you if you need to leave a key with the parking clerk.

Conclusion
Since 2007, Transport Canada has required that new cars, vans, light utility vehicles and sport utility vehicles be equipped with an immobilizer system. Seven years later, the downward trend in vehicle theft is evidenced by the reduction in the number of reported thefts in most provinces and territories in Canada. Off-the-shelf immobilizers may also be installed in 2007 and older car models, including devices expressly approved for use by the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC).
So what is an immobilizer and what is its function? It is an anti-theft device installed on your vehicle that will immediately stop the starter, ignition and fuel flow if anyone attempts to start your vehicle without the key. Although this device has proven to be the most effective device in the fight against auto theft
