Which destination to favor for your expatriation: USA or Canada?
Whether it is to find work, to study or simply to change your life, leaving your country of origin to settle elsewhere has become a lifestyle in its own right for many French people. After the United Kingdom and Asian countries, Canada and the United States are very popular expatriation countries. Between the land of Uncle Sam and the land of extreme cold, which destination to favor? Here are some points of comparison to consider.
Visa
Applying for an "immigrant" visa is the first step in living abroad. This document certifies that you are legally established in the territory.
Obtaining the visa is simplified to go to Canada because this country has signed an agreement in favor of immigration with France. It is therefore not necessary, for a French national, to apply for a visa for a period of less than 6 months, but beyond that, you must:
a Federal Skilled Worker Visa (TQF) if you plan to work and stay permanently on Canadian soil. In principle, you easily receive this administrative paper when your profile matches that of the qualified employees sought by the country
a visa compliant with Provincial Nominee Programs (CPC) if you are not eligible for the TQF and if the country considers that your expatriation as a semi-skilled worker is useful
a family sponsorship visa when you decide to live in Canada to join your relatives who are already resident there. This visa is valid even if you are in a de facto situation (common-law or cohabitation) and not officially married
a specific visa for family carers in the event that you are leaving France to take care of children, people with disabilities or the elderly
a study permit if you plan to pursue a university course on site
USA Visa On the contrary, the formalities are much more complicated to live in the USA.
For a short stay, the student who wishes to study in the United States will have to have an F, M or J visa. The F visa is required to pursue courses at a general education institution and the J-1 visa is necessary for au pair work
If you are going to stay in the United States and build a career there, you will need to apply:
an H-1B visa if this is your first experience for a post in the United States
an H-2B visa if you are going there for seasonal employment
an L-1 visa if you are an employee transferred from an affiliated company
a P-1, P-2 or P-3 visa if you work in an artistic, sporting or show-business field
an O visa will be issued to you if you hold very high-level diplomas as well as solid experience in science, film production, art, television or education
The same categories of visas can be passed on to the expatriate's spouse and children in the context of family reunification. But beware ! This measure only applies to married couples. The de facto situation such as cohabitation or cohabitation is not recognized by the American authorities unlike Canada.
Job
With a very low unemployment rate (14.2% for expatriates in 2014) as well as a particularly prosperous economy, Canada presents many opportunities to find a job. French know-how is in great demand in the field of NICTs, the environment, life sciences, agri-food, aerospace, aeronautics, and, of course, gastronomy. Vacancies are mainly concentrated in Quebec City as well as in the western part of the country.
Work World In the United States, the growth sectors for expatriates revolve around specialized engineering, fashion, catering and tourism. The "French touch" is very popular in cosmetics and hairdressing. For the past five years, there has been a strong demand for the recruitment of health experts, in particular nurses. Since 2009, the candidacy of a few hundred teachers, including French teachers, has been exceptionally requested. If you have skills related to finance, health, education or tourism, preferably settle in the Northeast (New York, Boston). Instead, head south (Texas, Atlanta) to land a job in telecommunications, aerospace or energy. Finally, if you plan to live in the Midwest (Cincinnati, Chicago), you will have easier access to employment opportunities related to manufacturing, consumer goods and logistics.
Weather
Both Canada and the United States are large countries, climates vary from region to region.
When moving to Canada, be aware that the east of the country (Montreal
