Why move abroad?
Why expatriate? Expatriation is a significant experience in the life of a person and their family, it is decided for different reasons which vary according to the personal and professional situation of each. This is an opportunity to take on new challenges and experience other, often unexpected, but rewarding realities.
A new life
Whether in the heart of the City of London, in Japan, Australia or Canada, expatriation is always a way to start a new life. While some seek the sun and the mildness of a more pleasant climate, others leave to change their habits, their daily lives and their living environment. For many expats, this is an opportunity to start a new career and see the future differently.
A new culture
Moving abroad means discovering a new country that is sometimes very different from your own, one of the major challenges of expatriation is to succeed in adapting to the culture of the country of destination. New way of life, of thinking, different cuisine, these are all facets of the host country that the expatriate must discover, and as much as possible, appreciate in order for their stay to be pleasant and fruitful.
Professional opportunities
According to a survey carried out by the consultancy firm Gallileo, out of 1,300 students from the 13 largest business and engineering schools in France, 34% plan to go abroad to boost their careers. It is true that mentioning professional experience abroad in a CV is an asset that usually catches the attention of recruiters.
In some cases, expatriation is an opportunity offered by the company such as, for example, a promotion due to an extension of activities. In addition to taking on greater responsibilities, this often results in a higher salary and, sometimes, benefits in kind such as a company car, accommodation or household staff.
To learn a new language
Besides professional reasons, expatriation can also be an ideal opportunity to learn a new language. Indeed, total immersion allows you to progress quickly and is far more effective than the most famous books and learning methods. To obtain satisfactory results, it is advisable to widen your circle of acquaintances and friends to the local population so that you can practice the language as often as possible. Every opportunity should be taken to meet the locals, whether at the market, on public transport or during walks. Watching series and films in their original version or with subtitles in the local language allows you to learn grammar, vocabulary and, most importantly, pronunciation.
Open-mindedness for children
Moving abroad with the children represents an additional challenge for parents. Indeed, they will have to help their offspring to adapt to a new school where they will have to make new friends. Without forgetting the fact of being in a new environment, of having other leisure activities,… To help them integrate, it is preferable to teach them, before leaving, to open up to others and to the world that surround them. Don't hesitate to encourage them to be curious and ask questions about things they don't understand.
Make a new network of friends
To those who still wonder why to expatriate, the youngest will answer that they can develop their network of acquaintances all over the world. Being sociable and being more open-minded helps to make new friends quickly. Do not hesitate to reach out to others, dare to overcome prejudices to expand your circle of acquaintances.
Better quality of life in some countries
It is clear that in some countries the cost of living is lower compared to that of France. This is particularly the case in a few African countries, such as Morocco. In 2013, the "Expat Explorer" survey showed that Thailand is unanimous among expatriates, ahead of Switzerland, China and Qatar. Canada and Australia also offer a quality of life that appeals to many would-be expatriates, especially since entry formalities are more accessible compared to other countries.
Be more open and sociable
When you arrive in a city where you don't know anyone and where you lack landmarks, you naturally feel compelled to reach out to others and show your sociability. These qualities will allow you to attract the sympathy of those around you and even strangers. Try to get out of your cocoon and go to places where you are likely to meet people. Start a conversation, show that you care about others, ask for information about the city or a particular place.
