Index Insurance ›Guide to auto insurance
Automobile insurance is primarily liability insurance to which other insurance coverages for property and persons can be added. The automobile insurance obligation has existed since Law No. 58-208 of February 27, 1958, codified in Article L211-1 of the Insurance Code. This obligation is limited to the civil liability guarantee for bodily injury and material damage caused to others by the insured vehicle.
Apart from civil liability, the other guarantees in the contract are optional and serve mainly to collect compensation for material damage that the vehicle may suffer or for bodily injury that the driver may suffer. The most common coverages are collision damage, comprehensive damage, theft, fire, weather events, glass breakage, driver protection, legal protection and personal and vehicle assistance. In addition, there are mandatory guarantees related to attacks and natural and technological disasters.
