You terminate your contract when it expires after having been informed within the time limits of your option to terminate
The “Chatel law” of January 28, 2005 (article L. 113-15-1 of the Insurance Code) obliges insurers to warn their policyholders, with the notice of expiry, of their right not to renew their contract as well as of the deadline for submitting their termination request.
This obligation concerns tacit renewal contracts covering natural persons outside their professional activities. Specifically excluded are “group” contracts, as well as life insurance contracts.
Information by the insurer must be sent at least fifteen days before the deadline for sending the termination letter (postmark as proof). For your part, the cancellation request must be sent to your insurer by registered letter with acknowledgment of receipt.
For example, if the main expiry date of your contract falls on January 1 and if your notice is two months, your insurer has until October 15 to inform you of your option to terminate your contract when it expires.
